Founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop, Maxine Clark (born: Maxine Kasselman on March 6, 1949 in Coral Gables, Florida, United States) is an American retailer that offers customised teddy bears and other plush animals. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1971. Saint Louis University has awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of her contributions to the field. The Bear Necessities of Business: Building a Company with Heart” was the title of her debut book, which was released in 2006. After graduation, she went to work for Hecht’s, a subsidiary of the May Company department store chain, where she rose through the ranks until she was moved to the company’s corporate headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1976.
Clark joined Payless Shoe Source in 1992 and served as its president until his departure from the business in 1996.
